Welcome to Tharakan Heritage Home Stay, Alappuzha / Alleppey, Kerala, India

Tharakan Heritage Home Stay, Alappuzha / Alleppey, Kerala, India was built 400yrs ago by Tachil Mathew Tharakan who was the Forest Minister to Maharaja Marthada Varma of Travancore. The house originally built at Allepey was later dismantled and a part of it has been reconstructed here. The tharavads of Kerala are no ordinary wooden mansions, besides the architectural aspect, they have deep social significance- they are a symbol of a man’s status and are a stronghold against the world. The tharavad gives the ‘House Name’ to a family and P.A Hormis Tharakan of Tharakans Homestay is as proud of the tharavad as he is of his illustrious past. Determined to see Tharakans Homestay standing tall in the next millennium, we at Tharakans invite you to enjoy a passionate holiday at our home. The secret of a truly relaxing holiday is the confidence of knowing that you are in safe hands while exploring exotic and beautiful places- we aim at making your holiday a truly memorable one.

Taking the family abroad isn’t always easy, particularly if you would like to broaden their horizons and show them something completely different. Whilst concerns over safety, privacy and the quality of food in a developing nation might be over weighed by the diversity of experiences and the benefit of their continuing education, it is always comforting to know the places you are staying at are used to having younger guests to stay.

A vacation staying as guests in private homes and secluded villas, learn to cook traditional Kerala dishes with farm fresh ingredients, float effortlessly through the canals and waterways of the Backwaters, watch fishermen landing the days catch through the surf breaking on a golden beach, explore cardamom plantations high up in the Western Ghats and discover a way of life that embraces a tranquil and peaceful ideal. A homestay is an opportunity for individuals and families to learn about a culture, language and customs different from their own. After the homestay holiday there remains an understanding of another's culture and customs. With this awareness comes an increased tolerance of the differences between peoples and a heightened appreciation of the similarities. Ultimately, the lasting friendships that are formed are perhaps the most valuable part of the experience .

A truly wonderful way to spend your time on the banks of the backwaters of Kerala! The mansion has five bedrooms with attached bathrooms and necessary living and dining rooms. The ‘nalakettu ‘ or open courtyard surrounded by pillars and covered with a canopy is used as a formal living space. A ladder from the living room leads up to the first floor, to the ‘ara’or timber store room that has the most amazing story to it.
